Voce, Inc. has established The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art to provide funds for the commissioning of new works of art by, and to promote the recognition of, gifted aspiring artists. The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art was created in honor of Dr. Peter Bagley and his lifetime devotion to working with young musicians to help them realize their full artistic potential. As Professor of Music at The University of Connecticut, his rigorous academic program and exacting standards, combined with his untiring support of talented students, produced some of the finest choral conductors, performers and educators in the United States. Through his work as a guest conductor for numerous festivals and all-state choirs throughout the country, Dr. Bagley continues to inspire young musicians everywhere.
In honor of Dr. Bagley and to support him in his lifetime mission of helping young artists to achieve their goals, Voce is proud to announce the commissioning of three new choral pieces to be premiered in the 2013-2014 “Full Circle” concert season. The October 19, 2013 concert entitled “Mason-Dixon” featured a new commissioned work by Colin Britt; the February 8, 2014 concert entitled “Immortal Bach” featured the commissioned work by Dan Campolieta; and our final concert of the season, “Life’s A Beach” featured a new work by Jason McCoy. Performances by Voce and other groups of existing works by Jason, Dan and Colin have been widely acclaimed, and Voce and Dr. Bagley are delighted to provide further opportunities for their creative voices to be heard.
The first recipient of The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art was Chilean composer Javier Farias Caballero, whose work was premiered by Voce and Alturas Duo – an elite instrumental ensemble specializing in the performance of South American Music – in the fall of 2008. The composition, “Oceana”, draws upon the musical heritage of Chile using text of the heralded Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, and epitomizes the goal of The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art of broadening the range of cultural influences in the choral repertoire available to American choral ensembles. The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art was established with the generous contribution of Dr. Bagley, and Dr. Bagley’s contributions this year have made the three new commissions possible.
